The Real Story – How Kanye West Got His Start
Ok here it goes, my name is Eddie G… I been friends with Sonny Mac and fam (Self Made) for over 10 years. I been through the thick n thin as far as Chicago rap goes, so I got the real for ya in as far as the truth goes. Let’s start with our first question…
1) How did Kanye West get hooked up with Jay-Z
Answer:
Back in the late nineties Jay-Z was on tour, he spun through Chicago for a date at the Rosemont Horizon. After the show, Jay-Z’s limo pulled up to Chi-Town producer Xtreme’s car and heard some hot beats bangin out their truck. Jay-Z called out the window for Xtreme to pull over. Xtreme with his manager at the time stopped, and exchanged contact info with Jay-Z. Xtreme was an up and coming Chicago producer at the time with a few credits for Fox. The outcome of this meeting landed Xtreme a few beat spots on the Hard Knock Life Video. Kanye happened to be part of Xtremes up and coming beat team, so Xtreme obliged and helped kick his tracks to Jay-Z. This led to “Can’t Be Life” – at which point Kanye ditched out on Xtreme and crew to pursue those contacts on his own. No loyalty.
